The UN mission in DR Congo will keep supporting the government against the Ebola outbreak in Ituri province, its head said on Friday. James Swan, the UN Secretary-General's special representative and MONUSCO chief, spoke in Bunia. He made the pledge after talks with the provincial governor and members of the provincial security committee, Radio Okapi reported.

Swan said Ituri faces two major challenges. The first is insecurity caused by armed groups. The second is the Ebola epidemic, which he said continues to hit communities hard. He said he had discussed with the governor and his team what is needed to tackle both.

Swan said protecting civilians remains MONUSCO's priority in Ituri. He said the mission has strengthened its peacekeeper presence in Bamande, in Irumu territory, and in parts of Djugu territory. He added that MONUSCO continues its patrols, is strengthening its early warning system and is supporting efforts to keep people safe.

On Ebola, Swan said the mission's role goes beyond logistics. He said MONUSCO helps health and humanitarian teams reach affected areas. It also secures health facilities and operations in Rwampara and Mongwalu in Djugu territory, as well as in Marabo, Nyakunde and Niania.

Swan said the mission wants to keep working with Congolese authorities, aid groups and local communities. The aim, he said, is to protect civilians and help contain the epidemic.
