Trey Nyoni says he is learning on the job as he adapts to playing two games a week for Liverpool. The 19-year-old midfielder faced the "ultimate test" this week, the BBC reported.
Nyoni made his first Premier League start in Sunday's loss to Arsenal, playing just under an hour. On Wednesday he played 85 minutes against Fenerbahce. He scored his first goal for the club, but Liverpool lost 3-2.
He said playing this many games is new to him. He did not even do it in the academy. He added that he is slowly adjusting to the pace and tempo of the game and is enjoying it.
Liverpool are in advanced talks with Nyoni over a new contract, the BBC reported. He signed a deal in 2025 after turning 18. In the summer, Liverpool rejected a £30 million bid for him from Nottingham Forest. Nyoni said he is leaving the contract to his agents and focusing on football.
Manager Andoni Iraola has backed him. Liverpool chose not to sign a midfielder in the summer after selling Curtis Jones. Nyoni has played 598 minutes so far this season, compared with 237 first-team minutes last season.
Nyoni credited the manager's faith in youth and the help of senior players. He said he, Rio Ngumoha and Lewis Kouamas push each other. In recent days he has faced Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard and N'Golo Kante.
He has been called up to the England Under-21 squad for games against Portugal and France later this month.
