Tanzanian forward Clara Luvanga helped Washington Spirit beat Chicago Stars FC 2-0 in the US National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), Mwananchi reported on Tuesday. The match was played at Audi Field in Washington DC.
Spirit took the lead in the 62nd minute through a Michelle Alozie own goal. Luvanga came on as a substitute and set up the second goal, scored by Trinity Rodman in the 85th minute.
The 21-year-old made history on October 5, 2026. Her 84th-minute winner gave Spirit a 3-2 victory over Houston Dash. According to Mwananchi, it made her the first Tanzanian to score in the NWSL. She also scored against Kansas City Current on October 25.
Since joining Spirit, Luvanga has played 235 minutes. She has scored two goals and provided one assist. Mwananchi says she averages a rating of 6.8 per match despite limited playing time.
Washington Spirit sporting director James Hocken praised the forward ahead of the playoffs. He said that Luvanga adds something to the team's attack. He added that she has shown she can score in different ways despite her young age, and that he expects her to keep performing well in the league.
The win over Chicago meant Spirit ended the regular season with 15 wins, eight draws and four defeats. That record secured a playoff place. Spirit face Portland Thorns on November 8, 2026, with a place in the final at stake. Luvanga is expected to feature in the squad plans.
Luvanga first made her name at Yanga Princess in the Tanzania Women's Premier League. She then moved to Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia before joining Washington Spirit. There she plays alongside Trinity Rodman, Ashley Hatch and Sofia Cantore.
