Money sent home by Kenyans in Saudi Arabia has fallen by KSh 16.8 billion, Business Today Kenya reports. CBK Governor Kamau Thugge blames Saudi labour reforms that favour skilled foreign workers.
Kenya is losing a significant source of diaspora income, Business Today Kenya reported on Monday. Changes to Saudi Arabia's foreign worker policies are reducing the number of Kenyans employed in the Gulf country. According to the outlet, remittances from Saudi Arabia have fallen by KSh 16.8 billion.
Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) Governor Kamau Thugge linked the sharp decline to Saudi labour reforms. He said that the reforms favour skilled foreign workers. For many households, that means less money arriving from relatives working in the Gulf.
The available sources do not say which period the decline covers. They also do not say how many Kenyan workers the changes have affected.
