KCB beat Gor Mahia 2-1 at Moi Stadium in Embu on Sunday. The Star reported that it was the defending champions' first defeat of the 2026/27 SportPesa League season. KCB held on for the three points with 10 men after Baron Ochieng was sent off in the 86th minute.
Mambote Assis and Richard Omondi scored for KCB. Alpha Onyango scored Gor Mahia's consolation goal. The win took KCB to 10 points, two behind leaders Gor Mahia.
KCB coach Robert Matano praised his players' discipline and resilience. He said they had followed instructions and shown great character. "We knew Gor Mahia would come at us, but we remained focused on our game plan," Matano said.
Matano said the team had worked on their finishing after their previous match against Mombasa United. He said creating chances was not enough. Against a very strong opponent, his side were more clinical this time, he added.
Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor blamed defensive lapses and missed chances. According to The Star, he faces questions over his team selection. Several key players were reportedly left on the bench to manage fatigue. Akonnor said his side had made mistakes they should not make at this level and must take responsibility for the result.
He asked fans to stay patient. Akonnor said one defeat would not change the club's ambition to retain the title. "We have a long season ahead, and one defeat does not change our ambitions," he said.
Gor Mahia face Nairobi United in their next match. The Star reported that Gor Mahia have won 15 of their 29 meetings with KCB. The Daily Nation reported that title-hungry AFC Leopards are making their own push as the leaders slipped.
