France opens attempted murder probe after petrol bomb thrown at riot police

Youth-led protests over living costs and education turned violent in France, Germany, Switzerland, Portugal and Albania on Saturday night. France arrested more than 770 people, and more than 100 police officers were injured in Frankfurt.

Paris prosecutors have opened an attempted murder investigation after incendiary devices were thrown at a group of about 15 gendarmes and police officers, The Guardian reported. The case covers the "attempted murder of persons vested with public authority". Injuries reportedly included second-degree burns. The attack was filmed on a mobile phone and shown on French television. Violence hit Paris, Marseille, Grenoble, Bordeaux, Lyon and Toulouse on Saturday night. An estimated 320,000 people had marched, some in Halloween costumes. As the rallies ended, masked and hooded rioters arrived. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez described the level of violence as "extraordinary". More than 770 people were arrested. The Guardian said the violence and looting were still well below the level of October 17, when 2,600 people were arrested and up to 3,000 shops were looted. In Germany, more than 100,000 people marched in over 30 cities. The protests were led by the "Gen Z regelt" (Gen Z will sort it) campaign, which wants better education and lower living costs. In Frankfurt, rioters damaged 17 shops and looted five, according to Hesse state interior minister Roman Poseck. More than 100 of the 1,300 officers deployed were injured. Police arrested 54 suspects aged 13 to 29. Poseck said that "things cannot go on like this". Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt…

Rioters loot shops in Frankfurt as Germany’s Gen Z protests turn violent

Tens of thousands joined youth-led protests across Germany on Saturday. Mostly peaceful daytime marches ended in evening clashes in Frankfurt, Berlin, Cologne and Hamburg, and several police officers were injured, AFP reported.

Masked rioters looted shops in Frankfurt on Saturday evening, AFP reported. Protesters in the financial hub threw stones, fireworks and petrol bombs. Police responded with water cannon and pepper spray. A large section of the city's main shopping street was sealed off, and a police helicopter circled overhead. Police said in a statement that "violent riots" were under way. Shop windows were smashed and Molotov cocktails were thrown at emergency staff. A gun store was among the shops looted. Police said they arrested a suspect and seized two weapons. The Bild daily reported that a trainer shop and a perfume store were also targeted. At least one officer was injured in Frankfurt. Hesse state interior minister Roman Poseck said that "around 100 clearly identified left-wing extremists" had infiltrated the Frankfurt protest. He called the way the event ended shameful. Police also used water cannon in Hamburg and Cologne after demonstrators threw fireworks, stones and bottles at emergency workers. In Berlin, police said they were pelted with eggs and bottles at an evening protest not organised by the main movement. An officer in Bonn suffered minor injuries. Police reportedly arrested large numbers of rioters. The protests were organised by the group "GenZ…
