Spain's footballers' union, AFE, wants the whole weekend of football called off. The union made the request on Thursday out of respect for Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel, SuperSport reported.
De Miguel died this week. According to SuperSport, he collided with Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono during a second division match on Monday.
Some games are already off. Tenerife's match at Granada has been postponed, as has Andorra's game against Mallorca. Several midweek cup fixtures were also postponed.
AFE said it had contacted men and women players "in every category". It said they agreed "unanimously" that this weekend's matches "should not be played". The union said the players had expressed deep sorrow. They did not believe the "psychological and humane conditions" existed to play in normal circumstances.
AFE urged Spain's football authorities to put people's interests ahead of sporting and economic ones. SuperSport did not report whether the authorities have responded.
