The Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has a new board chairman. Prof Eng John Kipngetich Mosonik was elected at a board meeting on Monday. He replaces Alfred Agoi Masadia, who was appointed in December 2024, Business Today Kenya reported.

The Eastleigh Voice reported that the election was held under the Government Owned Enterprises (GOE) Act, 2025. Mosonik already sat on the KenGen board as a non-executive director. According to Pulse Live Kenya, he joined in December 2025 and chaired the Strategy Committee.

The change comes soon after KenGen named Ronoh Kibet as its incoming chief executive. Pulse Live Kenya reported that Kibet is scheduled to take office on February 1, 2027. Both changes come as the company rolls out its G2G 2034 strategy. The long-term plan aims to raise generation capacity, expand sustainable energy and grow KenGen's regional role.

According to Pulse Live Kenya, Mosonik's mandate as chairman covers top-level business decisions, corporate governance and investment priorities. These include speeding up clean energy production, with an emphasis on geothermal power. KenGen said his background in engineering, infrastructure and governance would "provide a strong foundation for his leadership of the Board."

Mosonik has more than 35 years of executive experience. He served as Principal Secretary for Infrastructure from 2018 to 2022. In that role, he oversaw the building of 6,000 kilometres of rural access roads across all 47 counties. Before that, he was Chief Administrative Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Mining under former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

In the private sector, he sat on the Safaricom PLC board as a non-executive director from August 2023 until 2026. He is also active in academia. In January 2026, he was appointed Chancellor of Rongo University for a five-year term. He is also an Associate Professor of Business Strategy and Digital Transformation at Kenya Highlands University.

He holds an electrical engineering degree from the University of Nairobi. He also has a doctorate in business administration from Northcentral University in the United States and a PhD in strategic management from Moi University. The board said it looks forward to his "visionary leadership and guidance" as KenGen continues to deliver sustainable energy solutions.
