Glenn Maxwell has retired from international cricket. The Guardian reported that the 38-year-old has left Australia's T20 team and stepped away from state cricket with Victoria. He had already retired from one-day internationals in 2025.
Maxwell played 130 T20 internationals. He scored 2,897 runs at an average of 28.97, with a strike rate of 154.42. He also took 51 wickets and 62 catches. His highest score was 145 not out, against Sri Lanka in 2016. He played for Australia at the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka earlier this year.
He spoke about the decision on The Final Word podcast. Maxwell said that telling his Victoria teammates after his last one-day game for the state was harder than he expected. He said that he "got a little choked up".
Maxwell said that he was grateful for the time he played for his country. He said that he would have jumped at that career when he first walked into the Victoria dressing room around 2009. He added that he hoped to inspire children to play the game differently and to be themselves.
He also said that he got his first Test cap before he was really ready. He said that he was glad the selectors took a gamble on him. He was also glad he could repay their faith at different stages.
Beyond T20s, Maxwell played seven Tests and 149 ODIs for Australia. He also had a long first-class and List A career with Victoria. He will continue to play T20 franchise cricket, including for the Melbourne Stars in the upcoming Big Bash League.
