An Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) rally at Jacaranda Grounds in Nairobi descended into chaos on Saturday, Ghafla reported. Suspected goons stormed the stage and seized the microphone while party leaders were introducing themselves. The crowd panicked, and leaders and members of the public ran for safety.
One of the people who took the microphone told the crowd "Msitoroke", according to Ghafla. The outlet said it was not immediately clear what caused the incident or who the people were. The sources carry no official comment from ODM or the police.
The rally was meant to close ODM's month-long Mwezi wa Baba commemorations for the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. It brought together party leaders, elected officials and supporters.
Ghafla reported that the disruption came as the party is split over its direction ahead of the 2027 General Election. Cooperation with President William Ruto's administration is one of the main dividing issues. On Sunday, The Standard reported that a scramble to inherit Raila's mantle has left ODM at war. According to Ghafla, Jacaranda Grounds has also hosted rallies by opposition groups, including the Linda Mwananchi faction.
