The Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT) has discharged its earlier orders blocking the registration of The Ukombozi Alliance (TUA), Kenyans.co.ke reported on Thursday. The outlet said it had seen a notice from the tribunal. The coalition replaces the Azimio One Kenya Coalition.
Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka confirmed the decision in a statement. "The Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT), sitting today, Thursday, October 29, 2026, has discharged its earlier orders suspending the registration process of The Ukombozi Alliance (TUA)," he said. Kalonzo said no tribunal order now stands in the way. He argued that the Registrar of Political Parties is free to conclude the registration.
On October 13, the tribunal blocked Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition from changing its name to Ukombozi Alliance. PPDT Chairperson Innocent Muganda barred the Registrar from approving, registering or gazetting the name. A rival petitioner had claimed prior rights through the Ukombozi Peoples Party.
Linda Mwananchi, led by Edwin Sifuna, had also reserved the name "Ukombozi", according to Kenyans.co.ke. In a letter dated September 8, the Registrar said the proposed name had not been approved. The letter noted that another applicant had reserved Ukombozi Alliance on July 20, 2026. Sources close to Sifuna said they had proposed renaming a party to Ukombozi in March 2025, before the Azimio plans.
Kalonzo leads the alliance, having taken over from former President Uhuru Kenyatta. He has said the alliance will seek to accommodate other parties as the 2027 election nears.
The ruling comes as the opposition struggles to agree on a single presidential candidate, the Daily Nation reported. According to the paper, disagreements over who should lead the campaign to unseat President William Ruto are putting the 72-year-old Kalonzo under pressure. Some supporters say he is best suited for the job. Others question his chances.
On Monday, Kalonzo met DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua in Wamunyoro, the Nation reported. The meeting came days after a similar visit by Sifuna, in a renewed push to agree on one opposition candidate. Kenyans.co.ke reported that Sifuna is eyeing the united opposition's presidential ticket.
